January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Last week, Saving Innocence co-sponsored the “Human Trafficking Victim Services & Law Enforcement Appreciation Lunch” alongside the USC School of Social Work. It was a beautiful way to commemorate Human Trafficking Prevention Month, which is recognized nationally during the month of January each year. The event brought together a variety of partners, including victim service providers, law enforcement, legal and housing providers, and county agencies to reflect on collective efforts to combat human trafficking and provide supportive services to survivors.
The event included a powerful keynote presentation from Rebecca Bender, a lived experience expert and long time partner and friend of Saving Innocence. Rebecca generously and courageously shared her story of overcoming exploitation and trafficking and inspired guests to revisit their “why.” She has trained over 140,000 law enforcement and government agencies, equipping them with trauma-informed investigative tools and strategies to provide effective support to all survivors.
Saving Innocence also took part in an expert panel discussion that included partners from Homeland Security Investigations (Victim Assistance), Thai Community Development Center, LA County Sheriff’s Department, and the USC Trauma Recovery Center. The unique perspectives represented in this panel were both informative and motivating, reinforcing the commitment to learning from one another and collaborating to support and empower survivors of human trafficking.
